We will need to harness all dairy chains and all milk pools if we are to have any chance of meeting the growing demands for dairy and closing the nutritional security gap for all. We will need to drive improvements in the productivity and sustainability of all production systems. We need to understand all consequences of current and future nutritional policies, standards and regulations as we try to combat both the diseases of affluence such as obesity and diabetes and of poverty such as stunting.

Crossbreds are more productive but their tendency to wilt under Indian conditions of low input and harsh climate and susceptibility to tropical diseases warrants the conservation and development of indigenous breeds. To this end the Indian government has introduced the Rs 5,000-million Rashtriya Gokul Mission which aims at conserving and developing indigenous cattle breeds in a focused and scientific manner. This programme will cover genetic improvement of 13 buffalo breeds as well.

It is rather important that milk production is increased in the country by improving per animal productivity rather than by adding more number to the already burgeoning livestock population. More the number of animals that produce milk, more would be pressure on land and fiercer would be competition between man and animals for survival.
