Goa Dairy plans to set up new milk processing plant

PONDA: The Goa Dairy has proposed to set up a new plant with processing capacity of two lakh litres of milk daily.

A Goa Dairy official said, “We need this new plant considering the future requirements and demand for milk for the next 50 years.  Hundreds of farmers and employees depend on Goa Dairy to earn their livelihood.”

The official said, “The existing plant is  50 years old and has capacity of processing one lakh litres of milk per day. It started during the tenure of first Chief Minister Bahusaheb Bandodkar with a processing capacity of 10,000 litres of milk per day. At present we are processing 60,000 litres of milk per day and  considering the future requirements, there is a need to construct a new plant with processing capacity of two lakh litres per day.”

The Goa Dairy Official said, “Even a proposal has been sent to Goa government to do a follow up on project estimated at Rs 100 crore the cost of which is likely to be shared by Centre and State government on 60-40 basis. This project is expected to come under RKY scheme of Central Government and is likely to come up on the animal husbandry land near Goa Dairy’s cattle feed plant at Usgao.
