Jayen Mehta has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer of GCMMF

February 8, 2022

Vadodara: After a gap of over a year, the board of country’s largest dairy cooperative – the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – has appointed a chief operating officer (COO).

Jayen Mehta, who was serving as chief general manager (CGM), has been promoted as COO of India’s largest food products marketing organization that markets brand Amul.

In GCMMF’s hierarchy, COO’s post is next to that of the managing director (MD). Currently, R S Sodhi is serving as MD at GCMMF whose annual brand sales turnover stands at Rs 53,000 crore (US $ 7 billion).

Sodhi who had taken charge as MD in 2010 has completed two terms of five years each. After his second term ended in December 2020, the board members had given Sodhi an extension “till the time the next appointment is made”.

GCMMF’s vice-chairman Valamji Humbal confirmed the board’s decision. “After KM Jhala, our former COO, retired, the post was lying vacant. We have unanimously cleared the proposal to promote Jayen as COO,” said Humbal.

In November 2015, Jhala, who was serving as CGM, was promoted as COO but the post was lying vacant since he attained superannuation.

“This decision will reduce the burden on MD,” he said, adding that the appointment will also clear the way for federation to start the process for appointment of a new MD.

Jayen has been associated with Amul for the last 31 years. He has served as in-charge MD of Amul Dairy, Anand from April-September 2018 and is currently GCMMF’s nominee on the boards of Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Panchmahal and Valsad milk unions, all members of the federation.

A gold medalist from Vallabh Vidyanagar-based Sardar Patel University, Jayen like Sodhi is an alumnus of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand.
